The National Kidney Foundation of Maryland is dedicated to preventing kidney and urinary tract diseases, improving the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by these diseases and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation.
NKF-MD was established in 1955 by Harriet G. Guild, M.D., a well-known Baltimore physician. Originally known as the Maryland Nephrosis Foundation, the organization became one of the original affiliates of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) in 1964. The organization was founded with the purpose of fundraising for kidney patients who couldn't afford the dialysis that would sustain their lives. Today, we provide emergency patient aid, kidney disease education and organ donation awareness to thousands across our service area. In 2014 we celebrate our 50th anniversary as an affiliate.
2014 KEY Screenings
The National Kidney Foundation of Maryland continues its mission of early detection and early intervention through free KEY (Kidneys: Evaluate Yours) health screenings. KEY screenings, held throughout our service area, identify early markers for high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney disease. Please click here for the current KEY schedule and continue to check back for updates as we add dates and locations for 2015!
It's Diabetes Awareness Month! Diabetes is a major risk factor for kidney disease. People with diabetes should be tested for kidney disease every year, and control blood sugar and blood pressure. Click here for more information!
Emergency Financial Assistance Program
Financial assistance grants are provided to transplant recipients and chronic kidney disease and dialysis patients. Considered a resource of last resort, this financial assistance is need-based and can be used to meet critical, short-term emergency needs such as food, utilities, rent or medication.
